How To Brew Mr. Viet
Vietnamese coffee isn’t just a drink, it’s a ritual.
Whether you love it bold and intense, smooth and aromatic, or quick and convenient, there are many ways to prepare your Mr. Viet coffee at home. Below are some of the most popular brewing methods. Depending on the coffee type you choose, you can experiment with different techniques. Our short videos demonstrate a few of these methods to help you get started.
Real Strong Coffee
Brewing Method: Traditional Phin Filter
What you need:
- Phin filter
- 2–3 tbsp coffee
- 90–95°C hot water
- Cup (and condensed milk if desired)
Method:
- Add 2–3 tablespoons of coffee into the Phin chamber.
- Gently shake to level the grounds.
- Place the press insert on top and lightly tighten (do not compress too firmly).
- Pour a small amount of hot water to bloom the coffee and wait about 30 seconds.
- Fill the chamber with hot water.
- Cover with the lid and allow the coffee to slowly drip for about 4–5 minutes.
- Stir and enjoy black, or mix with condensed milk for traditional Vietnamese coffee.
For iced coffee, pour over ice after brewing.
Instant Stick
Brewing Method: Just Add Hot Water
What you need:
- 1-2 tbsp coffee
- 150–200ml hot water
Method:
- Add coffee to a cup.
- Add 150–200ml of hot water (adjust to your preferred strength).
- Stir well until fully dissolved.
- Enjoy hot, or pour over ice for a refreshing iced coffee.
Simple, fast, and full of flavour.
Instant Coffee
Brewing Method: Just Add Hot Water
What you need:
- 1 sachet
- 150–200ml hot water
Method:
- Empty the sachet into your cup.
- Add 150–200ml of hot water (adjust to your preferred strength).
- Stir well until fully dissolved.
- Enjoy hot, or pour over ice for a refreshing iced coffee.
Simple, fast, and full of flavour.
Whole Beans
Whole beans can also be brewed using french press, aeropress, moka pot, or Vietnamese Phin filter once ground to the appropriate grind size.

Drip
Brewing Method: Pour Over
Grind: Medium
Ratio: 1:15 (e.g 20g coffee to 300ml water)
What you need:
- Whole coffee beans
- Grinder or Hand grinder
- Pour over dripper and filter
- Hot water (90–95°C)
Method:
- Grind the beans to a medium consistency.
- Place filter paper in the dripper and rinse with hot water.
- Add ground coffee and level the surface.
- Pour a small amount of hot water to bloom the coffee for about 30 seconds.
- Slowly pour the remaining water in circular motions.
- Allow the coffee to drip completely (around 2–3 minutes total brew time).
Brewing Method: Espresso Machine
Grind: Fine (espresso grind)
What you need:
- Whole coffee beans
- Espresso machine
- Grinder
- Portafilter and tamper
- Filtered water
Method:
- Grind the coffee beans to a fine espresso grind.
- Add 18–20g of ground coffee into the portafilter basket.
- Distribute the coffee evenly and tamp firmly.
- Insert the portafilter into the machine group head.
- Start extraction. A good shot should take around 25–30 seconds.
- Aim for approximately 36–40ml of espresso (a double shot).
- Serve as espresso or use as a base for milk-based drinks.
Ground Coffee
Ground coffee is convenient and versatile, making it suitable for many brewing methods.
Brewing Method: Aeropress
What you need:
- Aeropress
- Paper filter
- Ground coffee
- Hot water
Method:
- Insert the filter into the Aeropress cap and rinse with hot water.
- Add coffee to the chamber
- Pour hot water over the coffee.
- Stir gently for about 10 seconds.
- Insert the plunger and press slowly after 1–2 minutes.
Brewing Method: French Press
What you need:
- French press
- Ground coffee
- Hot water
Method:
- Add ground coffee to the French press.
- Pour hot water over the coffee and stir gently.
- Place the lid on and allow the coffee to steep for 4 minutes.
- Press the plunger down slowly.
- Serve immediately.
Drip
Brewing Method: Single-Serve Drip Bag
What you need:
- 1 drip coffee bag
- Mug
- 150–180ml hot water (90–95°C)
Method:
- Tear open the outer sachet and remove the drip coffee bag.
- Gently shake the bag to level the coffee grounds inside.
- Tear along the marked line at the top of the bag to open it.
- Pull out the side handles and place the bag securely over the rim of your mug.
- Slowly pour a small amount of hot water over the coffee and allow it to bloom for 20–30 seconds.
- Continue pouring hot water slowly in stages until the mug is filled.
- Allow the coffee to finish dripping, then remove and discard the bag.
